Transitional Living Program

Marywood provides shelter and support for young homeless women and their children.

In collaboration with our partner, Child Incorporated, Marywood operates Stepping Stones, a transitional living program.  This residential program serves homeless women, ages 16 to 21 years old, who are pregnant or parenting.

Serving our community:

  • In Travis County nearly 4,000 persons are homeless on any given day.
  • This includes single adults of all ages, persons with disabilities, and families with children.
  • It is estimated that 1 in every 4 homeless persons is a child.
  • Families comprise over 40% of the homeless and typically these families groups are headed by a single young mother with 2 to 3 children, who did not finish high school or is unemployed.
  • Homeless children suffer more health problems and 60% of these children are unvaccinated.

About our program:

Residents may stay at Marywood for as long as 18 months while they stabilize their lives and gain the life skills that will enable them to be self-sufficient and provide for their children.

"I'm very thankful that I have had the opportunity to live at Marywood.  While I stayed there I gained knowledge about parenting, budgeting, and personal care."(Former resident.)

Stepping Stones is a program that includes educational and employment services, life skills classes, parenting and child development opportunities, individual therapy, and health care resources.

Since Stepping Stones opened in 2000, the program has served nearly 165 young mothers and 160 children. In 2006:

  • 28 homeless mothers and 24 children were provided a safe and supportive shelter
  • 100% of the children received current immunizations and health care services
  • 100% of these young women who had not completed high school were enrolled in an education program
  • 97% of our residents received vocational assessments and job preparation, and placements services
  • 100% of the children were enrolled in licensed child care programs
